Each one of us has a working self-image, a mental picture of ourselves that we employ in our everyday life. This concept may be something specific, or it may be something vague, but we all have it. We all picture ourselves as something.
This picture is as important as your personal beliefs. The two must be in sync if you are to remain in balance. Your philosophy is the blueprint for how you construct your life. Your working self-image is the foundation on which that your life is built.
Choosing how we picture ourselves is, in fact, the single most important decision we make in our lives. And most people give this decision little to no conscious thought. And that’s an enormous mistake, for when you don’t consciously choose how to identify yourself with your surroundings, your surroundings end up identifying you.
That is what we want to turn around here. Take control of your working self-concept and you can take control of your life. The goal here is to forge a new self-concept. A new working image of yourself. Not scientifically comprehensive but practically fulfilling. One that inspires, enlightens, that leads us not into temptation but delivers us from evil.
Our working self-concept is the portal we create to the world. Our window to reality which shapes it as much as it views it. It’s important, all right. As Einstein said, “Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.”
Your thoughts are the building materials of your life. Your soul is your bedrock. If you build your life on the bedrock within you, your life rises. If you build on the sand within you, your life will constantly topple over. We are not born as blank slates but blank slabs of stone. Our spiritual foundation has already been poured. Our blueprint is up to us. Building a substantial life is a matter of building on our spiritual foundation rather than building on the pile of construction materials themselves. The more we build without a foundation, the less substantial our become. Eventually, it must topple.
Hardship is not the source of our suffering. The source of our suffering is repeatedly seeing our hard work topple from its own weight. See yourself as a separate, sovereign and special and you will always be building on a foundation of sand. See yourself as connected and you will build your life on a foundation of rock.
It’s simply being true to your design, what you were meant to be. See yourself truly and you will remain true to your original design. See yourself falsely and you will be ever working against that design.
